When you visit Disneyland or Walt Disney World, if it’s food, it’s more than likely going to be Mickey shaped — including pretzels! So, this week we took a crack at creating our very own Mickey pretzel. Mickey ended up with a fat chin, crooked smile, and evil eyes, but we love how he turned out, anyway. He was so much fun to make.
We made Mickey pretzels twice with two different recipes, once with the recipe we share below, and once with the Auntie Anne’s Pretzel Kit (not sponsored), and everyone liked Auntie Anne’s better (duh!). They were amazing, and we couldn’t stop eating them. The pretzels we made from scratch were good, but not as sweet and were too crumbly, but overall were pretty tasty. We’ll share the scratch recipe with you, and let you decide which you like better.
- 1 1/4 cup warm water
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 4 cups warm water
- Kosher salt, for topping
- In small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water, about 10 minutes.
- In large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
- Add oil and yeast mixture.
- Mix until forms into a dough. If dry, add a couple teaspoons of water. If sticky, add a teaspoon of flour.
- Knead dough until smooth, 5-7 minutes.
- With cooking spray, coat large bowl and place down in bowl. Spray plastic wrap with cooking spray and cover.
- Let rise in warm place for about an hour, until dough doubles in size.
- Cover baking sheet with cooking spary.
- In large bowl, dissolve baking soda in 4 cups of warm water, set aside.
- Remove dough from bowl.
- On a lightly floured surface roll each piece into a rope and shape into Mickey.
- Once Mickey is shaped, carefully pick him up, quickly dunk him into the baking soda water solution.
- Place Mickey pretzel on a baking sheet.
- Sprinkle with kosher salt.
- Bake until browned, approx. 8 minutes.
- Brush with butter (optional).
- Do not make your rope pieces too fat, like I did.
- Make sure all the pieces are pressed well into each other.
